Break-In & Care

Break it in, your way

Build a comfortable closure and a pocket that suits your game. This natural break-in routine uses shaping and catch, without soaking the leather. Take your time—your glove will develop its feel through repeated use.

  1. Set the fit. Adjust the wrist opening so it feels secure without being overly tight. A tight wrist opening can make closing the glove harder.
  2. Gently stretch. Hold the tops of the thumb and pinky and gently stretch the glove. Avoid overstretching if you prefer a tighter feel.
  3. Work the web. Fold the top of the web and press down for 5–6 seconds. Repeat at different points until it reaches your preferred feel.
  4. Flex the heel. Grip the thumb and pinky near the heel and flex back and forth several times, checking how easily the glove opens and closes.
  5. Create break points. Close the glove and use a glove mallet on the thumb side. Flip it over, fold the pinky side, and work it from the back to establish the closing points.
  6. Shape the pocket. Open the glove and work the catching pocket with a mallet. Check the depth often and shape it to the softball you use.
  7. Play catch and repeat. Let the impact of the ball continue shaping the pocket. Repeat the shaping steps as needed, keeping enough structure for reliable fielding.

Younger players may need a more fully worked heel and pocket to close the glove comfortably. Players who prefer a firmer feel can leave more structure. The goal is a glove that closes comfortably for you.

Clean after play

  • Remove dirt. Use a dry microfiber cloth or soft brush on the palm, pocket, finger stalls, web, seams, and around the laces.
  • Spot-clean. Wipe stubborn dirt with a slightly damp soft cloth without saturating the leather. If needed, use a cleaner for finished sporting-goods leather; test a hidden area and follow its directions.

If your glove gets wet

Blot excess moisture with a clean towel and remove loose dirt without rubbing it into the leather. Open the glove for airflow and let it dry fully at room temperature. Once dry, check for excessive stiffness or dryness before deciding whether it needs conditioner.

Condition only when needed

Start with a clean, dry glove. Choose a conditioner compatible with its leather and finish, and test a hidden area first. Apply a very thin layer with a soft cloth to dry areas, remove excess, and allow it to absorb according to the product directions. There is no fixed schedule—inspect the leather rather than conditioning automatically.

Keep its shape between games

  • Support the pocket. Store a softball in the pocket. If using a wrap, keep it loose enough to avoid unnatural creases. Do not flatten the glove under heavy equipment.
  • Store cool and dry. Keep it away from direct sunlight, heaters, vents, and hot vehicles.
  • Check laces and seams. During heavy use, inspect weekly for fraying, cracks, loose webbing, broken lace ends, or loss of pocket shape. Worn or broken laces may need relacing.

Avoid these shortcuts

Do not soak the glove, use household cleaners or bleach, or speed drying with a hair dryer, clothes dryer, oven, or heater. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, excessive conditioner, and over-softening areas that need structure.

One-year glove coverage

SBX fielding gloves, including custom gloves, are covered for manufacturing or material defects for one year from purchase. Coverage is for the original buyer purchasing from SBX or an authorized dealer; retain the original receipt.

SBX’s break-in service does not void the limited warranty. These gloves remain eligible for covered warranty claims even though they cannot be returned.

What is excluded

  • Damage from misuse, accidents, improper storage or care, alterations, or unauthorized repairs.
  • Heat-treated gloves, including steaming, boiling, baking, or microwaving; excessive oil or petroleum jelly.

  • Used, counterfeit, or unauthorized-reseller purchases, and lost or stolen products.

Submit a claim

Email info@sbxfastpitch.com with your receipt and a description of the issue. Keep the glove pending review. If physical inspection is needed, SBX provides a prepaid label.
